Paine drew a New England–influenced hull with a long modified keel and balanced skeg-hung rudder, emphasizing seakeeping over speed — the displacement-to-length ratio of 365 places it firmly in the expedition-cruiser category. The cutter rig carries nearly 910 square feet of working canvas and the boat was also offered in a pilothouse variant (Cabo Rico 42 Pilothouse) with a raised deck saloon.
