About the Pacific Catamaran

Carter Pyle's Pacific Catamaran represents an early entry into fiberglass multihull production, first launched in 1960 when catamarans were still considered exotic craft. Built by Newport Boats and later Mobjack Manufacturing, this compact 18.75-foot twin-hulled design pioneered affordable catamaran sailing for recreational boaters. The fractional sloop rig features a rotating mast, an advanced configuration that allows for better sail shape control and efficiency. With centerboards housed in each hull, the Pacific draws just over two feet, making it ideal for shallow water exploration and easy launching from ramps. The generous 270 square feet of sail area combined with minimal displacement creates an impressive sail area-to-displacement ratio of 68.67, promising spirited performance in light to moderate conditions. This boat excels at day sailing and coastal cruising, offering the catamaran's inherent stability and reduced heeling compared to monohulls. The wide 7.92-foot beam provides excellent deck space for a boat under 19 feet, though accommodations remain basic given the emphasis on performance sailing. While not suited for serious offshore work, the Pacific Catamaran delivers an engaging introduction to multihull sailing with forgiving handling characteristics and reasonable trailering dimensions.

Performance Ratios
Comfort Ratio Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio predicts how comfortable a boat will feel in offshore conditions. Higher values mean a steadier, more comfortable motion in a seaway.
Under 20 — Uncomfortably rough20–30 — Acceptable coastal30–40 — Good offshore comfortOver 40 — Very comfortable offshore
2.68
Capsize Screening Formula The USHS Capsize Screening Formula estimates offshore capsize risk. Lower is safer — values under 2.0 are considered acceptable for offshore sailing.
Under 2.0 — Safe for offshore2.0–2.2 — Borderline offshoreOver 2.2 — Coastal use recommended
3.99
Hull Speed Hull Speed is the theoretical maximum speed of a displacement hull, calculated from waterline length. Most cruising sailboats reach this speed in moderate conditions. 5.67 kn
Pounds/Inch Immersion Pounds per Inch Immersion (PPI) tells you how much weight is needed to sink the boat one inch. Useful for calculating how additional gear and stores affect waterline. 3.04 pounds/inch
