About the F 27 Sport Cruiser

Designed by renowned multihull pioneer Ian Farrier, this folding trimaran represents a breakthrough in trailerable performance sailing that helped establish the modern multihull market. Built by Corsair Marine from 1986, the F 27 Sport Cruiser became one of the most successful production trimarans ever created, with 450 hulls launched over its production run. The boat's innovative folding mechanism allows the outer hulls to fold against the main hull, reducing beam from over 19 feet to under 8 feet for trailering and storage. This feature opened coastal and lake sailing to owners without permanent slips, while the trimaran configuration delivers exhilarating performance that far exceeds comparable monohulls. With its fractional sloop rig and impressive sail area to displacement ratio of 37.83, the F 27 offers genuine multihull speed and acceleration. The moderate draft of under 5 feet provides good shallow water access, making it ideal for coastal exploration and bay sailing. While primarily designed for daysailing and weekend cruising, the boat's speed and seaworthiness have proven capable of longer passages in experienced hands. The fiberglass construction ensures durability, while the compact 8-horsepower auxiliary provides reliable motoring in light conditions.

Performance Ratios
Comfort Ratio Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio predicts how comfortable a boat will feel in offshore conditions. Higher values mean a steadier, more comfortable motion in a seaway.
Under 20 — Uncomfortably rough20–30 — Acceptable coastal30–40 — Good offshore comfortOver 40 — Very comfortable offshore
2.96
Capsize Screening Formula The USHS Capsize Screening Formula estimates offshore capsize risk. Lower is safer — values under 2.0 are considered acceptable for offshore sailing.
Under 2.0 — Safe for offshore2.0–2.2 — Borderline offshoreOver 2.2 — Coastal use recommended
5.56
Hull Speed Hull Speed is the theoretical maximum speed of a displacement hull, calculated from waterline length. Most cruising sailboats reach this speed in moderate conditions. 6.87 kn
Pounds/Inch Immersion Pounds per Inch Immersion (PPI) tells you how much weight is needed to sink the boat one inch. Useful for calculating how additional gear and stores affect waterline. 10.73 pounds/inch
