About the Explorer 18 Dix

Designed by renowned South African naval architect Dudley Dix and first launched in 1992, this compact centerboard dinghy represents a thoughtful approach to small boat sailing. Built by Sentinel Boats using traditional lapstrake wood construction, the Explorer 18 combines classic boatbuilding techniques with modern design sensibilities. The gunter rig configuration provides excellent performance while keeping the mast manageable for trailering and storage. With an overall length of 18.04 feet and a waterline length of 15.91 feet, the boat offers surprising interior space for its size while maintaining easy handling characteristics. The centerboard design allows for versatile sailing in both shallow and deeper waters, making it particularly well-suited for coastal exploration, protected bay sailing, and weekend adventures. The lapstrake construction not only provides structural strength but also gives the boat distinctive visual appeal and excellent seakeeping qualities. With 143 square feet of sail area and a beam of 6.23 feet, the Explorer 18 delivers spirited performance without being overpowering for novice sailors. The 4.10-foot draft provides good directional stability while still allowing access to shallow anchorages, making it an excellent choice for gunkholing and coastal cruising adventures.
